Dual degree program on Energy and Environment  
 

Background

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the Sriwijaya University (UNSRI) have agreed through the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 24 October 2008 to enable cooperate in the areas of academic offerings, research activities and dissemination. Following this, the two institutions have agreed to jointly develop and offer a dual degree Masters degree program “Energy and Environment”. This program has been developed promote AIT – UNSRI cooperation, and will prepare trained professionals in the Energy and Environment field who will be conferred the master’s degree by the two institutions. The dual degree master’s program will be initially offered in the interdisciplinary field of Energy, and Environmental Engineering and Management at AIT’s School of Environment, Resources and Development and at UNSRI’s graduate school, starting from 2009.

The students who fulfill the requirements for graduation will receive both the AIT Master’s degree and the UNSRI masters degree, Master Technique. No other certificate/degree will be provided.

Admission requirements and applications

At AIT

1.   The Duration of Study:
The total study period would normally be 24 months (January of year 1 to December of the following year). This includes two semesters at UNSRI, two semesters at AIT and one intersemester at AIT. The normal intake is in January. The normal semester period at UNSRI is six months, while at AIT it is around four months.

 2.   Entry Requirements:
The applicant should hold a bachelors degree (normally from a four-year program) or its equivalent in an appropriate field; have above average undergraduate grades (minimum CGPA of 2.75).

Preferred background of study:
Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Physics and Chemistry

3. English Requirements
AIT is an international institute with English as the sole language of instruction. Admission to AIT requires proof of English language proficiency which may be satisfied in any of the following:

Submission of an official test score of English Language from any of the following standardized English exams: TOEFL (500),  IELTS (4.5).  

Certificate Of University Medium Of Instruction. This document certifies that you attained your previous degree from a university where the sole medium of instruction is English.

AIT ENGLISH INTERVIEW TEST SCORE (AITEIT). AITEIT is administered by AIT Language Unit and is applicable only to applicants in Thailand . For details, please contact: languages@ait.ac.th

EXEMPTION:  Applicants who are citizens of countries where English is the native language are exempted from this requirement. Proof of citizenship should be provided.

At UNSRI

To be eligible for admission to the master's program, an applicant must:

  • hold a Bachelor degree from an recognized university (public or private) in the relevant field acceptable to UNSRI; for a graduate Bachelor degree from outside of Indonesia should be attested and signed by DIKTI (Indonesian Ministry for Education), and must show Indonesian language certificate.
  • have undergraduate grades; the minimum GPA requirement for admission to the master's program is 2.75.
  • submit the application form together with the following documents:
  • a certified true copy of bachelor degree and academic transcript,
  • 2 letter of recommendation
  • colour photograph (4x6)
  • certified true copy of IC (Indonesian) or certified true copy of passport (non-Indonesian if readily available)

An application processing fee of 600,000 IDR (or US$ 55) is required.    

  • pass the entrance test: Potential Academic test ( > 450 ), TOEFL test ( > 450), Academic test, and Interview test; the selection tests are under a selected commission.
  • have a good physical and mental health.

As a public educational institution, UNSRI also organizes international class with English as the language of instruction. Applicants must demonstrate basic proficiency in English. The standard is a score of 500 on the TOEFL test or 4.5 on the IELTS. Applicants who are native English speakers or holding a degree with English as the medium of instruction may be exempted from this requirement.

Students joining these programs will be allowed to take the research study option only. The final research study exam could be held at AIT or at UNSRI

                               Intersemester 2: At AIT (June – July): Special study: 3 credits
                               Semester 4:At UNSRI (July – August): Research study: 9 credits

Academic Requirements for Graduation

The students should complete the minimum credit requirements of 54 credits for obtaining the dual degree, the details of which are listed in Section B.

All AIT requirements for Masters study are applicable to this program as well.

Fees and other expenses

The total fees for each programme is as follows:

  • At AIT:  Thai Baht 459,000.
  • At UNSRI:  IDR 32,000,000 (Thai Baht 107,000).
