Rapid urbanisation and industrialisation with the concomitant soaring increase in energy consumption in Asian developing countries have brought about increasing numbers of air polluting sources. The development of infrastructure, environmental technology and management practices does not keep pace with the emission increase, which results in a progressive deterioration of air quality. Presently, there is a common lack of background data, appropriate control technologies, sound management strategies as well as human and financial resources, which are essential for improving air quality. Among the issues currently exist in the air quality management of developing Asian countries three focal issues are addressed in this research project (Phase 1). They are: |

The proposed activities for the second phase are a natural continuation of the first phase to fill in the data gaps and to implement the research findings of the first phase for improving air quality. In phase 2, 4 issues are addressed, namely,
This project is a component of the Asian Regional Research Program on Environmental Technology (ARRPET). It is sponsored by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SAREC/Sida). The first phase is for 3 years starting from 2001 and the second phase is starting from 2004.
