Background and Mission

Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change aims to fulfill AITs vision of sustainable Asia as Asia is rapidly rising economically, socially, and technologically. The efficient utilization and clean energy resources, leap-frogging environmental technologies and management, preserving local and global environment, and conducive consumption and behavioral changes, among other are crucial points that the region must pay attentions to. In these realms, we strive to generate of new knowledge and options, support their diffusion and implementation. The Missions of the Department are:

  • To develop a next-generation-leaders able to address societal needs of clean energy, utilization of environmental technologies and management and address the burgeoning issue of climate change.
  • To serve the society by creating and delivering new solution-oriented knowledge and practices for better energy transitions, challenges to air, water and wastewater related environmental problems, and the climate change in rapidly changing Asia through research and outreach.

Academic Programs

Multidisciplinarity is at very core of Department’s teaching, research and outreach activities. Our academic activities focus on problem-solving and creating work-ready graduates who are able to take real-life challenges once graduated. The students come from multiple disciplines- engineering, science, economics, management and humanities. The academic programs are:

  • Energy, with specialization in Energy Technology; Energy Policy Planning and Economics; Electric Power Systems Management
  • Environmental Engineering and Management, with specialization in Environmental Technology and Management; Water and Wastewater Engineering
  • Climate Change and Sustainable Development – students can focus on climate change with specialization in sectoral mitigation and adaptation.
  • Energy Business Management (jointly with School of Management)

Degrees offered in each Academic Program

  1. Sc or M. Engg (2-year program)

Ph. D or Dr. of Engg (Minimum 3.5-year program)

MBA in Energy Business (with School of Management) (2-year Program)

Diploma (1-year program)

Certificate (1 semester program)

The Department also offers:

Double Degree M. Sc. or M. Engg with Partner Universities (2-year program)

Integrated 5-year Bachelor-Master Degree with partner Universities (Masters’ in AIT)

Credit requirement for degree completion

For master program: (48 credit) with minimum 2.75 CGPA and successful completion of Thesis or Research Study

For doctoral program: (84 credits) with 18 credit coursework with minimum 3.5 CGPA and successful completion of dissertation and minimum one publication in peer-reviewed international journal approved by Doctoral Program Review Committee (DPRC)

Where our graduate find job?

Our graduates are serving in key leadership positions regionally and globally in Governments, industries and businesses, United Nations Organizations, Multilateral banks, renounced consulting firms, civil society and NGOs. We prepare work-ready graduates familiar with problems and equipped with knowledge and tools to find solutions.

Research programs

The Department has very active research program that are done through student research as well as sponsored projects and individually by faculty members. The academic programs of the Department have a long history of research-excellence for decades. Current research program of the Department has several streams. The key streams are:

  • Energy for sustainable development, upscaling renewable technology diffusion and integrating to energy system, techno-economic assessment of renewable energy technologies, improving energy access through appropriate technologies and policies, alleviating bottlenecks for regional energy integration, especially for electricity, improving energy efficiency and barriers, and energy policies, pricing and incentives.
  • Low carbon and climate resilient cities, carbon accounting, climate change mitigation option analysis, low-carbon-technology assessment, climate policy assessment, climate change and disaster management, impact and adaptation to climate change, especially in infrastructure sector such as water, energy, coastal, urban and agriculture.
  • Water quality assessment and management, environmental impact assessment, solid waste treatment and management, air-pollution modeling, monitoring and control techniques and industrial pollution control and monitoring, sustainable consumption and production.
  • Conventional physico-chemical and biological treatment processes, hazardous industrial waste treatment technologies, industrial bioprocess techniques applied to environmental engineering, advanced water and wastewater treatment, ozonation, membrane techniques, and sludge treatment and management

Regional Energy Resources Information Center (RERIC)

The Regional Energy Resources Information Center (RERIC) houses a collection of energy-related reading references and resources. It also repackages and disseminates information on energy and environmental issues related to energy. RERIC publishes books and reports, organizes series of international conferences which are well-attended internationally, maintains the International Energy Journal, a legacy journal owned by AIT which has been regularly publishing peer-reviewed articles since 1979.

The International Energy Journal

The International Energy Journal (IEJ) is a quarterly, peer-reviewed academic journal published by the Department through its publications arm, the Regional Energy Resources Information Center (RERIC). Papers on technical, socio-economic and environmental aspects of energy utilisation, planning, and conservation, renewable sources of energy, electric power transmission, generation and management are regularly published. The IEJ is indexed in the SCOPUS and in the SCImago Journal Rank (0.212) and is the only Thailand-based journal that publishes papers coming from different parts of the globe focusing on energy-related issues. The journal is listed in the EI Compendex source list. The journal maintains an online database at www.rericjournal.ait.ac.th.
