A short term training on “Safety and Quality in Innovative Food Production Systems” was organized by Department of Food, Agriculture and Bioresources (FAB), School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) during 20 – 26 May, 2018 at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand in the frame work of Project ASIFOOD financed by EACEA under the ERASMUS Plus Program.
Professor Dr. Rajendra P. Shrestha, Dean of the School of Environment, Resources and Development, AIT inaugurated the training program on 21st May and emphasized on the importance of food safety and quality in the present context.
The training was conducted mainly by three instructors including Dr. Anil Kumar Anal, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Food, Agriculture and Bioresources, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand, Dr. Gerhard Schleining from BOKU (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna), Austria and Dr. Nicolas Korsak from University of Liège, Belgium.
There were altogether fifty five participants including postgraduate students, quality assurance officers from industries, food safety and quality consultants, Government officers, and personnel from NGOs and INGOs from ten different countries including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
The topics covered during the training comprised of Innovations in Food and Beverage Product Development, Food Quality and Safety Management Systems, Food Safety Legislation and Laws, Legal Obligations, Hygienic Design and Sanitation, Auditing in Food Processing Industries, Laboratory Quality Management Systems and Laboratory Safety and Regulations. The participants shared and exchanged their experiences, knowledge and expertise with each other during group activities and presentations. A laboratory session was also carried out to demonstrate the requirements and essentials to conduct the research related to food innovation, food safety and quality. Similar courses in the form of classroom based as well as online systems are aimed to conduct in future at the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand.
